Double Decker Root Bridge -Meghalaya

I could remember a story from school textbook where villagers prayed for nature to provide wood to survive, tree shedded it’s leaves on its own and saved the villagers.
Probably the pure souls of meghalaya would have prayed the mother to help to cross the river, she opened her arms in root form and connected. It’s eternal beauty of mother. People respect , protect, worship mother nature still. Let’s have a look into woowful bridge.
Yes I am talking about the amazing living root bridges of Meghalaya.

Ever planning to visit northeast or planning Meghalaya, don’t miss out this place. Rather than a sightseeing, it’s a trekking. Yes we need to do hiking to witness the magic of nature.

Here’s a glimpse…

Double decker living root bridge and Umshiang River.

A breif history
These structures are result of consistency and patients of khasi people. They selected this particular Indian rubber ( Ficus elastica) tree . The roots are selected from either side of river and guide to grow across through bamboo stem hallow. They are constantly maintained and nurtured, strengthened to connect to other side. The moist environment makes the growth easier. This process doesn’t take a year or so, it takes decades to build. The generation has to pass to complete. That is the dedication and worship of nature by the local tribes.

Why double decker? The river when overflowed for long, people built another over it. Later to flow reduced to create this magnificent double decker bridge.

There are many of this kind around hills of Meghalaya

Trek to double decker living root bridge.

How difficult is the trek?
It’s a moderately difficult trek. Need good fitness.May take 3hrs to complete.

It is located in nongriat village of Cherrapunji. Bridge build to Umshiang river. The trek starts from Tyrna village. You can reach Tyrna village by road from Cherrapunji ( Also called Sohra in Khasi) around 11 km. Nearest airport is Shillong, 65 km from Tyrna village. Other nearby airport is Guwahati.

It all starts here…

You need to go down 3500 steps to reach the bridge. And climb back 3500 steps.

Steps between lush green forest .

You have to reach Tyrna village from Cherrapunji. Early the start, less will be the crowd. There will stalls which provide lite breakfast like bread omelet, sandwich, maggie. You can have the breakfast and start the trek. There will stalls in between too. So need not worry about food. You can take the trek pole made of bamboo stick, rent for 20rs , feels good to hold. Most of the part is descent. Need to cross the Umshiang river in between. You can see one short living bridge while going to double decker. Since it’s a descent it may take 45 to 60 minutes to reach. There’s a beautiful falls located in the background of bridge. You can dive to waterbody. If you have enough time trek some more steps and reach Rainbow waterfalls which is still more beautiful. Carry extra clothing so that you don’t miss the chance to enjoy waterfall.

Spend the memorable time in falls. Hiking back is the difficult part. Can have maggie at the stall before heading back. Between the lush green forest taking step by step will be most amazing part.

Don’t miss!! Don’t miss the photo shoot with butterflies…
Yes this particular yellow coloured butterflies love to sit on us. They can be held in hand.
Pro tip😎!! Don’t chase them to sit on you, when they are camly sitting on the side rails, just give your fingers in front of their legs gently. They will take steps to climb your fingers. Hold them gently. And click as many pics you want. Ahh… Other species will not do the same.

If you are unable to climb , yes some people easily climb down with excitement, struggle to climb up. The locals will be there for your rescue. They carry you, negotiate the price.

Local villagers carrying on bamboo stretcher .

If you feel the trek cannot be done, there’s a single root bridge, around 1000 steps down. Can enjoy that and climb back.
